RE: Slide lubricant

We just had our MH worked on at HWH for a slide/leveler motor problem. The tech that worked on our rig stated we should NOT use anything to grease the slides. He indicated that dirt and dust would build up on the lubricant and this could cause problems with sticking and possibly the motor burning out. Our problem with caused by moisture getting into the works from sitting all winter in IL. It was expensive to get fixed. Perhaps you should call the slide mechanism mfgr and check with the tech depart? Safe travels, Judy

RE: Best route through Chicago

We took the same route all summer, however, there is about 10 miles of construction on I39 from the I90 intersection to the WI line. It's not too ugly if you take it slow and easy. We stayed in the left lane and had no problems with the 36' DP, towing a crown vic. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Big Bend Area November 2008

FYI - There has been a lot of heavy flooding in the park during the last 3 weeks. Most of the southern half of the park was flooded, I don't know when the RG Village will be reopened or Cottonwood CG. The Rio Grande crested at 33 feet, about 20 feet above normal. I would call the NP to check on availability of camping at either site. Also FM170 from Terlingua to Presidio has been closed due to the flooding, the NP should know about the status of the road. A lot of people are still going to the NP, just adjusting their camping plans to dry camp out of the flooded area. November weather should be great, warm during the day and cool at night. I'm green with envy, I won't be able to get down there til April Go and enjoy the park. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Storage Lot in Wisconsin

When we lived in MN & WI, the only storage we could find was at an outdoor facility, such as at the fair grounds. They would schedule you to come in at a certain time on a certain day and after you parked your RV or boat, it was there until the facility opened the next spring. This policy seemed to be the norm. I suspect it's because most people couldn't/didn't want to use their RV or boat during the winter. Not sure on the price, it's been several years since we had anything to store. Good luck Judy

RE: Indiana Campground near Ft. Wayne

Johnny Appleseed CG is.. part of the Colusieum complex. It is a city park, and about 1/2 mile from the center of the city. Lots of people use this as a base when doing family research at the Allan County library. It's very shady, friendly staff, you might want to call them, I know the cg is closed near the end of Sept for the Johnny Appleseed festival. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Smell in freezer

Several things come to mind, bleach, ammonia, charcoal (the kind that you use in fish tank filters) crumpled newspaper. There have been several threads on this forum with the same question. If you do a search, you should be able to find many more hints. Good luck, safe travels, Judy

RE: Judge Magney State Park, North Shore Lake Superior

Kelly, I'm glad you discovered the Lake Superior North Shore, isn't it a fabulous place to visit? It is one of our favorite places ever. Safe travels, Judy

RE: south padre island??

We have stayed at the SPI KOA also, the rock is left over from the previous owner. We liked the amenities at the KOA. there are 2 county parks on the island, one at each end. Isle Blanca is about a 1/2 mile from the KOA. It was decent, almost no shade and out in the open, so you will have full brunt of the wind. The other one is on the north end, we didn't drive into it because the entrance is pretty narrow. Try Dirty Als for fish and shrimp. It is a dumpy looking place, but has the best fish & shrimp I have ever had. It's between the KOA and Isle Blanca county park. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Wintering in BC in a Motorhome

I've never been to BC, what is the weather like? Is it very cold, -0F and colder? Do you get a lot of snow, wind? Will you try to stay at someone's home or at a cg? Will any CG's be open? If you stay at a relative's home, where will you be able to dump your holding tanks? We just spent the winter in northern IL, the coldest it got was -12F, but we had 60+ MPH winds with it, so it was really cold. We had the foil covered foam on several of the windows and heavy drapes. we We have a MH, with 4 inch foam skirting all around it, all of the cracks were sealed with expanding foam and 4 inch rigid foam on the slides. We also had electric heaters under the rig and in the hook up bay. We still had some freezing problems a couple of times, mostly the water side. I think the wind sucked the heat away from the hook ups. We have a 100 gal propane tank hooked directly to the rig and we went through 4 tanks, about 1 per month. The last tank was 3.13 per gal., so it was starting to get expensive. We had to use the propane furnace as it forces heat down into the bays, plus we used 2 electric heaters inside the MH. I'm sure that wintering in BC is doable, but you will have to make sure you have skirting of some kind, heat tape on your pipes, make sure your windows are covered in some fashion. Also make sure you have proper clothing for yourself and your pets. Be prepared to use a lot of propane, I expect it will be very expensive this winter. Don't forget you will have to winterize your car also. There have been several discussions on wintering in cold climates, so if you do a search, you will probably find lots of information. One winter is enough for me, I will not do it again. Good luck, safe travels, Judy

RE: diabetic supplies

Tom Kat is correct, however, I would call the doc or hospital first and ask about proper disposal and then dispose of the supplies in the manner they recommend. You could even offer to pay a small sum for them to take the stuff and dispose of it. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Bear Tooth Highway

Do a search here and you will get several recent replies to this same subject. We did it in a 36ft MH with a toad, I know that isn't your situation, however, the road is narrow, lots of switchbacks, steep grades and NO guardrails, this will be the same no matter what vehicle you are driving. There are places to pull over and look at the scenery. It is an absolute fabulous drive, but if you are not reasonably experienced with mountain driving, it can be a white knuckle drive. I would take it again, because as I said earlier, it is fabulous. Safe travels, Judy

RE: In a camper during the winter...

Where are you going to be staying in IL? and how long? We just spent the winter in our MH at a location about 20 miles north of Kankakee, IL. We had 4 inch foam skirting around the MH, heat in the compartments and still had some freezing problems, due to very strong winds. You probably will not find a cg open due to freezing temps. Where do you plan to get water and dump your tanks? You will have freezing problems, both sewer and water, if you don't have some kind of skirting on your rig and heat in the sewer/water compartments. You will go through a lot of propane, we went through 4 100 gal tanks and that was for the furnace, plus we had electric heaters inside the MH. Please don't get me wrong, it is very doable, but it takes a lot of extra work and it can get to be costly. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Replacement Windshields

I'm sorry, I only have a suggestion. We had to have a windshield replaced in our Winne Journey DP. Since it was covered under our insurance, we just turned in a claim to the insurance co, they contacted an auto glass place. The auto glass place had to order the glass, but it only took a couple of days and they had it installed. Is the glass totally gone or just cracked? Are you in travel mode or are you parked for several days? Perhaps you can contact a large auto glass place and see how long it would take to get the replacement glass. Good luck, safe travels. Judy

RE: Must See Things in North Dakota

Sorry, but there isn't much in ND but wheat and beet farms. You already know about Teddy Roosevelt NP, hope you have reservations, the CG's fill up fast. There is a Mandan Village at Bismarck that is tied to Lewis and Clark. Don't know of anything else. Safe travels, Judy

RE: I-10 San Antonio to Fort Stockton

It's a long, lonely road, but you should be able to get diesel at Ft. Stockton. A lot of people drive diesel trucks out there. Also, there is a fairly big truck stop at Van Horn Be sure to top off at San Antonio and you should be just fine. Enjoy the Hill country you drive through. Safe travels, Judy

RE: LaCrosse, Wi to St. Paul, Mn

We've driven both with a 36ft DP and a toad, F150 p/u. US 61 is the better road only because the WI side has a lot of small towns that you have to go through and the roads can be pretty narrow. Both sides are pretty, I think the WI side is more rolling, nothing steep. The WI is mostly county roads, blacktopped, 2 lanes. If you take it slow and easy, you should be ok on the WI side. US 61 will have a lot more traffic. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Convection Oven Door Replacement

We just replaced the opener button on our Sharp, found the part on the net and called them. Good customer service for a change. You might want to call them and check on feasibility of replacing the door. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Upper Wisconsin and Michican UP

I know you plan on Rhinelander, but you might want to consider a jog up to Lake Superior. What route do you plan to take to Rhinelander? If you take I35 north to Duluth/Superior you can spend tons of time hiking the superior hiking trail, sp's, all sorts of neat things on the lake. Duluth and Superior both have great museums. If you take Hwy 2 east to MI, you can stop at Bayfield and tour the Apostle Island's. Then on over to the Porcupine Mtns, the Keewenaw Pensula. There are lots of sp's in MN, WI and MI to enjoy. There is probably more to see than you have time for this trip. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Where to buy two oven range accessories?

We stopped at a RV dealer near Kankakee, IL to buy the rubber grommets for my stove, they just gave me the package of 8. I have also seen them listed on the RV Surplus store's website (the one in Elkhart, IN) for $1 per grommet. I'm confused as to where you want the range cover to go, do you want it to go inside the oven? I've never seen one to go inside the oven, but if you don't use it, why couldn't you just cut a piece of plywood to fit in it. or use a cookie tin, or a cheap ceramic tile. Safe travels, Judy

RE: Beartooth All American Highway

The Beartooth is fabulous. Drivable in a MH, but not advisable. We took the MH (36ft with a Crown Vic as a toad) over it in June last year. It was a white knuckler, due to no guard rails, switchbacks and steep grades. Just remember it will probably be closed until at least Memorial Day every year due to snow. I would love to do it again in the car. Take your time and stop often for pictures. Safe travels, Judy
